Mandate

To design a 3D puzzle made out of paper.

Given a Typographic era, this project was about designing and developing a 3D paper puzzle that encapsulates the typographic time frame, concepts and values. My topic was the International Typographic Style also known as the Swiss Style.

Process

Behind building the puzzle

The process became about following the ideas and school of thought of the typographic era. It became important to use these ideas to make something contemporary while holding onto the key aspects. The movement emphasizes cleanliness, readability, and objectivity. Basic principles of the style are asymmetrical layouts, use of a grid, sans serif typefaces and flush left, ragged right text.

Solution

My solution was to follow the Fibonacci grid that uses a mathematical model. This model was valued by the Swiss Style Typographic Movement. I designed and developed 5 pieces that fit into each other in a rotational way. The colors and type reflect the international type movement. The tints of the red-orange are derived from the classic original Swiss Style posters. The project mainly uses a contemporary sans serif typeface as per the movements techniques, however a modern serif typeface is used in the booklet pages for contrast and to push the boundaries.

Cleanliness.
Readability.
Objectivity.”
