Mandate

To design a inside first page for a classic novel that visually represents its story.

Visually represent the book's story with type only using the paragraphs on the first page. The book I was working with was, " The House at Pooh Corner", by A.A. Milne. It is the second volume of stories about Winnie the Pooh.

Process

How the layout design took shape

The placement and layout of the type became about staying true to the story by relating it to the era that the book was written in and for. This was done by using a childlike expression of thought, while mixing it with the formal writings of an adult. The first story is about building a house at Pooh Corner for Eeyore. The writing is silly and nonsensical with funny poems, and the way the characters interact mimic the way children act.

Solution

The main message of the book is about childlike thoughts. The quote I chose, concludes the novel's message. It is emphasized in a bold staggering sentence, placed over a structured paragraph. The poetic justice is the nonsensical vibe contrasted with the sensical background. This explains the logical adult format of the book that illustrates the adult way of thinking. The adult author writes the story through a childlike thought process. Another concept here is about the staggering poetry since the book is filled with that style of rhymes and dialogue.
